no surprise act

As of January 1, 2022,

The No Surprise Act  policy requires healthcare providers to furnish uninsured or self-paying patients with an estimation of costs for medical services and items. To comply with this law, healthcare providers and facilities are obligated to provide an estimate of expected charges when you schedule an appointment or if you request one, so you can be well-informed about the costs of healthcare services beforehand. This estimation is referred to as a "Good Faith Estimate".

Client Right to Good Faith Estimate:

Under the rights to a good faith estimate, healthcare providers and facilities are require to provide you with cost estimates for medical services and items. You are entitled to receive an estimate after scheduling an appointment at least three business days before the appointment, or if you request cost information at least 10 business days before the appointment. The estimate should include a list of services, providers, and service codes and be accessible to you, with explanations provided over the phone or in person and followed up with a written estimate in your preferred format.

It's important to store the good faith estimate in a secure location for future reference. If you receive a bill for medical items or services that exceeds the estimate by $400 or more, you may have the option to challenge the bill.

To learn more, you can refer to a sample of a good faith estimate that may comprise (PDF) and instances of good faith estimates that qualify or don't qualify for the dispute process (PDF).

The Buchanan Counseling Center is committed to transparency and fairness in our therapy services. As required by law, we provide clients who choose not to use insurance or do not have insurance with a detailed estimate of the cost of therapy services. The total cost will depend on factors such as the length and frequency of sessions, as determined by the initial assessment and ongoing evaluation of treatment needs and progress. Our estimate includes a comprehensive list of possible services and is valid for 12 months. In case of any fee changes or at your request, we will provide a new good faith estimate.
